Micky van de Ven downplayed any injury concerns after being pulled off late in Tottenham’s draw with Manchester United.

The centre-back had been sidelined with a hamstring injury since Spurs’ defeat to Chelsea in early November, but returned to Old Trafford after more than two months.

Van de Ven played with Cristian Romero, who had returned from his own hamstring injury, and performed as Spurs overcame a lot of absences to produce an outstanding performance.

Rasmus Hojlund put United ahead after three minutes, but Spurs rallied strongly, equalising through a flicked header from Richarlison. They had to do it again after Marcus Rashford regained the lead, with Rodrigo Bentancur tying it up again inside a minute of the second half beginning.

Romero and Van de Ven largely dealt with the threat posed by United’s attackers, with Van de Ven‘s quickness particularly evident anytime the hosts attempted to exploit Spurs’ high line.

However, the 22-year-old was forced to leave with only a few minutes remained after collapsing and pointing at his leg. Van de Ven initially continued, but Ange Postecoglou quickly replaced the centre-back with Emerson Royal, with Radu Dragusin already making his debut.

Speaking after the game, Van de Ven said that it was not a significant issue, with the defender convinced that it was simply cramp from being on the sidelines for so long.

“Really happy to be back,” Van de Ven told Sky Sports.

“I had a little cramp at the finish, but everything else was fine. It was simply a tightness in the calf.

“I didn’t play for I think two-and-a-half months and you saw the intensity of the game was really high, so to be honest I think minute 89, it was just cramp.”
