Victor Orta sought to sign a’special’ Leeds United player for Sevilla in January.

Victor Orta has not had the greatest of days at Sevilla since his departure from Leeds United in May 2023.

Victor Orta

Orta was fired as Elland Road’s sporting director after succession of disastrous mistakes on player recruiting and management selections, yet he was able to secure big job in Europe just few weeks later.

And, while Orta is well-liked by many of those who met him at Leeds, he is having similarly difficult time at Sevilla, who are currently 15th in La Liga.

Sevilla are already on their third manager of the season under Orta, and despite their troubles, they gave him the opportunity to add players in January.

Willy Gnonto

According to Estadio Deportivoone of the players he attempted to sign was Leeds’ Wilfried Gnontowho he eventually brought to West Yorkshire during his final summer transfer window.

Orta wanted Gnonto in Sevilla.

Throughout the transfer window, Daniel Farke and Leeds were certain that no first-team players would be sold, and that is exactly what happened.

Gnonto actually faced difficult first half of the season at Leeds because he suffered from hangover from his summer escapades, as well as the form of others in his position.

Wilfried Gnonto

However, Farke has always believed in Gnonto, and that conviction has paid off in the last month, with the’special’ 20-year-old scoring five goals in all competitions.

Gnonto is also in line for a new deal with Leeds, and his return to form has been a great help for the Whites, who have now won eight Championship games in a row.

Looking back, Leeds were able to hold steady despite Orta’s attacks, and Gnonto appears to play an important role in the fight for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
