“We can’t compete with Brighton,” admits a Manchester United insider.

With all due respect to Brighton and Hove Albion, when a Manchester United insider admits that the Red Devils are unable to compete with the Seagulls, something is wrong.

Roberto-De-Zerbi

United are one of the most storied clubs in English football history, but under the Glazer family’s ownership, things have steadily deteriorated.

Boardroom and managerial appointments, infrastructure issues, and other issues have made life at the club extremely difficult.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s INEOS Group may be able to assist when it finally approves a deal to buy 25% of the club, with the caveat of immediate control of the sporting side of the business.

However, it is clear how much work he will need to do to turn things around.

“We just can’t get the best young players in at the moment, and that’s killing us – we can’t compete with Brighton, let alone Man City,” a club source told Football Insider.

Intriguingly, Sir Jim is reportedly considering leaving his current manager, Erik ten Hag, for Brighton.

According to another Football Insider report, once the partial takeover is complete, the club will look to hire Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.

While it is unclear whether the Seagulls would be willing to lose their manager, or whether De Zerbi himself would want to test himself at a club that clearly isn’t being run as well as Brighton currently is, the fact that United appear to be casting the net spells trouble for the Dutchman.
