West Ham are looking to recruit Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, West Ham United are ready to sign Wilfried Gnonto, while Leeds United are looking at Burnley’s Manuel Benson as a potential replacement

At the start of the season, the 20-year-old indicated interest in a move from Leeds United. Despite his return to the team following an initial absence during the transfer drama, a deal did not materialize. His probable return to the top flight is currently generating a lot of talk, with Premier League clubs, most notably West Ham, expressing interest.

Tavolieri now reports that Leeds are anticipating Gnonto to be transferred to West Ham and have already prioritized Burnley’s winger, Benson, as a replacement after earmarking the Belgian. According to reports, the Belgium u21 International agreement is still “open and moving.”

Gnonto‘s contract keeps him at Elland Road until June 2027, but it appears that he may be heading for the exit door at Elland Road.

Need for depth

The Hammers are having an impressive season, currently sixth in the Premier League standings. Their 34-point tally is only six points behind Arsenal in fourth place.

Although they have a commendable League position, they require more depth to compete with teams like Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester United. David Moyes‘ side has identified Gnonto as a potential attacking option. Gnonto, described by Roberto Mancini as a “phenomenal” talent, will fit in well with West Ham’s counter-attacking style of play due to his pace and technique.

Wilfried Gnonto

Moyes has tactically deployed Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus on the left wing, stressing the need for reinforcements. Jarred Bowen’s injury setback, combined with Mohammed Kudus‘ commitments to the Ghana national team at the present African Cup of Nations, highlight the urgent necessity to bring Gnonto into the team.

Gnonto earns £20,000 a week at Elland Road, and West Ham should be able to easily match that.

The Hammers next head to Bramall Lane to play Sheffield United, looking to rebound from their poor appearance in the FA Cup.
