“What the hell is he doing?” BT pundit upset with 23-year-old Liverpool player against Ajax in second half

During Liverpool’s Champions League match against Ajax, Steve McManaman criticized Darwin Nunez, telling BT Sport (airing on 13/9; 21:31) that he does not understand why he fouled Jurrien Timber in the second half

In a very intriguing match at Anfield, the Reds did more than their share of the work. Before Mohammed Kudus tied the score for the guests, Mohamed Salah gave Jurgen Klopp’s team the lead.

After controlling possession and failing to find a winner for an extended period of time, Liverpool appeared destined to be frustrated. Joel Matip eventually produced a towering header to win the match when it appeared that it would end in a draw.

Liverpool hasn’t always done well for itself. Nunez also missed a chance to make a strong impression after coming off the bench.

Midway through the second half, the 23-year-old was introduced. He then conceded a foul, which infuriated McManaman greatly.

Threatening to encircle Timber, the striker was running toward the corner. Nunez, however, overreacted and ended up trip-tripping Timber.

It was a pointless foul that released Ajax from any immediate pressure. The commentator then expressed his anger toward the Uruguayan.

“For what in the world is he doing that? He may be eager to start the game, but Timber, he won’t get anywhere. And he gives him a chance to trip over themselves,” he told BT Sport.

Darwin Nunez was criticized by McManaman.

You can see why Nunez went too far at that particular time. He could have had a goal opportunity there if he had won the ball.

And the kid might think he has a big thing to prove. Since receiving that unfortunate red card against Crystal Palace in August, he has failed to score.

However, there are enough encouraging signs to imply that Nunez will eventually succeed. When he did miss opportunities against Ajax, his teammates rallied quickly to his side.

Those instances reveal how eager he is to impress. For Nunez at Liverpool, everything will come together at some point.
