Supporters praised the decision as a “absolute disgrace” when it came to giving Willy Boly the boot during the first half of Nottingham Forest’s game against Bournemouth.
The Nottingham Forest supporters were incensed after Willy Boly was controversially sent off during the first half of the team’s match against Bournemouth.
In the fifth minute of Saturday’s Premier League game (December 23), the center defense received just his second yellow card of the year. However, the 32-year-old was given his second yellow card for a challenge with Bournemouth skipper Adam Smith less than fifteen minutes later.
The ball was up for grabs, so both boys ran for it. The Englishman’s foot was writhing in agony on the ground when Boly, the first to reach it, thrust his leg out.
Willy BolyDespite the fact that Boly clearly made contact with the ball first, referee Robert Jones disqualified him without hesitation. The Ivory Coast international and his teammates were taken aback by the decision.
Fans were equally astonished to see one X (formerly Twitter) user post on social media:
“Willy Boly has just been given a second yellow card for this challenge. Absolute disgrace. Stunned.”
Another fan displayed their anger with the red card as they commented: “So CLEARLY wins the ball. Absolutely ridiculous” as a third person took aim at the performances of referees this season as they stated: “The standard of officiating from the PGMOL is so poor and it’s time for the elite levels of the sport to start looking at how to improve it.”
However, not all fans shared the same disdain for the decision as one outlier agreed with Jones’ assessment as they said: “Clear second yellow card, too aggressive, doesn’t win the ball, goes down too easy. Spot on red.” Despite going down to 10 men, Forest held on to the 0-0 score-line for the rest of the half.
