Willy Gnonto’s delayed move from Leeds United to Everton may not happen for the second year in a row, according to Sky Sports’ Alan Myers.
On July 26, the journalist responded to a fan via X, casting doubt on signing the Italian international who Sean Dyche had been interested in, after a trade was rejected last summer. The Toffees have completed the loan-to-buy acquisition of Jesper Lindstrom from Napoli, and Myers had previously stated on July 24 that Gnonto was still on the cards, but he is no longer confident.
He put it like way: “I’m not sure that one happens at this point, but who knows?”
Everton have signed Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom.
TEAMtalk stated on July 22 that there was a £5 million deficit in negotiations with Leeds, but the situation was improving and the gap may be overcome soon with add-ons.
Confirming Lindstrom’s arrival at 24, is surely a positive if he can recover from Napoli’s poor title defence last season. And, with Jack Harrison returning from Elland Road on loan and Iliman Ndiaye signing from Marseille, missing out on Gnonto would not be a calamity.
However, the 20-year-old is certainly a big goal at Goodison Park, having had many proposals a year ago [Alan Irwin, 1 September] and providing Sean Dyche with more attacking alternatives. It remains to be seen whether Leeds’ attitude is difficult to crack given Everton must undoubtedly handle their budget wisely, or if it indicates that there are other priorities after Lindstrom’s arrival.
However, the most recent report is significantly less favorable on the Gnonto chase than previous indications, which could lead to another frustrating ending for both the club and the player.
In other Everton news, a new opinion on the likely dismissal of Dyche and Kevin Thelwell has emerged following the takeover failure.
