With a vital transfer window decision, Leicester City might provide Leeds United a significant promotion assist

Leicester City is linked with Carlos Corberan to fill their open head coach position, and that hire would have consequences for Leeds United in the Championship.

The relegated Premier League class will pose the greatest threat to Leeds United‘s promotion aspirations next season, but they will also benefit if the best of the rest are weakened before August. West Bromwich Albion are the highest-ranked club returning from last year’s promotion fight, trailing only Leeds, and with Carlos Corberan in charge, they should be there or thereabouts again.

Will the former Whites coach be at The Hawthorns, though? Leicester City are apparently circling the West Midlands as they consider their options for the vacant head coach vacancy. Enzo Maresca has agreed to join Chelsea, leaving the Championship champions without a figurehead as things now.

Graham Potter, who is still unemployed, is another target for the Foxes, but he has been very choosy in his managerial choices since leaving Chelsea. Corberan would want significant compensation, having signed a new contract last year, but would undoubtedly leap at the chance to finally manage in the top flight.

The 41-year-old has made a huge impression in the second tier with both Huddersfield Town and West Brom. The Terriers wildly outperformed to reach the Championship play-off final in 2022, after placing third in the regular season under the Spaniard.

Corberan faced the Baggies in October 2022, when they were second from bottom after 16 games. He led them to ninth place by the end of that season, and he managed a fifth-place finish last season, trailing probably the Championship’s finest top four ever.

If that vital piece is removed from a West Brom group that does not seem good on paper, Leeds may find one of last season’s strongest sides substantially weakened heading into 2024/25.
