Michael Edwards has returned to the fold at Liverpool after Fenway Sports Group announced his hiring as CEO of Football, and appointing a new manager is part of his responsibilities.
Liverpool has brought back the dealmaker in the hopes of securing Xabi Alonso as their future manager.
Michael Edwards, a former sporting director, is returning after a two-year absence to serve as the first CEO of Football for owners Fenway Sports Group. Edwards is anticipated to bring in Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes, who will leave the Cherries at the end of the season, to replace the departing Jorg Schmadtke in his previous job.
The first task for Edwards and Hughes will be to choose Jurgen Klopp’s successor, and former Reds midfielder Alonso is the club’s top priority. Hughes is said to be well acquainted with Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez, having spoken with him last summer prior to appointing his client Andoni Iraola as Bournemouth manager.
Liverpool has yet to make an official proposal to Bayer Leverkusen for Alonso, and they do not want to be accused of upsetting the German team as they prepare for a historic first Bundesliga title.
Liverpool has tough competition from Bayern Munich for Alonso, and the Bundesliga club wants the Spaniard to return as Thomas Tuchel’s successor. Edwards will take over Liverpool’s hunt for a new manager, while Sporting Lisbon’s Edwards and Hughes’ first job will be to find Jurgen Klopp ’s successor and former Reds midfielder Alonso is the club’s No 1 target. Hughes is understood to know Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez well from his talks with him last summer before appointing his client Inaki Ibanez as Bournemouth manager.
and it is understood Sporting Lisbon’s Positions in dire need of care. Mike Gordon has provided excellent day-to-day monitoring for his other owners, as I have personally witnessed.Going forward, I’m excited to collaborate with FSG’s Board of Managers. Also, I completely recognise that this role carries high expectations, and I plan to seek, hire, and then empower leaders who meet and represent the club’s values and objectives.
“Having previously served the club, I am fully aware of the emotional investment made by supporters in the city, as well as throughout the UK and around the world. I am looking forward to getting started.”
